DEAN WATERMAN
CYCLING PHYSIOTHERAPIST & Bike Fit Newcastle
B. Physiotherapy, APAM

Dean is a physiotherapist with over 10 years of experience, graduating from the University of Newcastle in 2013. His career has included experience across private practice, aged care and community settings, with a particular interest in cycling, cycling injuries and bike fitting.

Cycling Physiotherapy & Bike Fitting

Dean has been involved in cycling and triathlon since his early teenage years. Combining his professional knowledge as a physiotherapist with his experience as a cyclist naturally led to a strong interest in cycling biomechanics, cycling-related injuries and bike fitting.
After recognising the need for a comprehensive bike fitting service in Newcastle and the Hunter region, Dean established CycleFit Physiotherapy in 2015.

His approach combines physiotherapy, cycling-specific assessment and bike fitting to look beyond simply changing the position of the bike. The aim is to understand the interaction between the cyclist and the bike.
Dean uses his training in cycling-specific physiotherapy together with advanced 3D motion analysis technology (STT Cycling 3DMA) to assess riding position and movement on the bike.

Who Can Benefit From a Bike Fit?

Dean works with cyclists of all abilities — from recreational riders and commuters through to triathletes, competitive cyclists and elite athletes.
A professional bike fit may be useful if you're experiencing discomfort or injury while riding, have recently purchased a new bike, are increasing your training volume, or simply want to optimise your position on the bike.

Dean's bike fitting and cycling physiotherapy services can help address issues including:

- Knee pain while cycling
- Lower back pain
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Hip pain
- Foot and ankle discomfort
- Hand numbness or tingling
- Saddle discomfort
- Position-related cycling problems
- Returning to cycling following injury

The goal is to find a position that considers comfort, efficiency, injury management and performance rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all bike setup.

Cycling Injury Assessment & Rehabilitation

Sometimes the bike is only part of the problem.
Pain experienced while cycling can also be influenced by factors such as strength, mobility, previous injury, training load and the way your body interacts with your riding position.

As a physiotherapist and bike fitter, Dean can assess both sides of the equation.

Where appropriate, treatment may combine changes to bike setup with physiotherapy, strength and rehabilitation exercises to help address the factors contributing to your symptoms and get you back to riding comfortably.

Bike Fitting for Newcastle Cyclists

Based at Up N Adam Performance Training & Physiotherapy in Hamilton North, Dean provides bike fitting and cycling physiotherapy for cyclists from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and across the Hunter region.
Whether you're preparing for your first long-distance event, training for a triathlon, racing competitively, commuting to work or simply want to enjoy your weekend rides without pain, the assessment is tailored to you, your bike and your riding goals.

About Dean Outside the Clinic

Outside of work, Dean enjoys spending time with his family, weekends away camping and, when time allows, getting out on the bike himself — although perhaps not as often as he would like!
