ITB SYNDROME PHYSIOTHERAPY NEWCASTLE
Overcome ITB Pain. Run Stronger. Ride With Confidence.
Pain on the outside of your knee can quickly turn running, cycling and everyday activities into frustrating experiences. ITB syndrome is a common overuse condition, particularly among runners and cyclists.
At Up N Adam Performance Training & Physiotherapy in Hamilton North, Newcastle, we take the time to understand your symptoms, assess your movement and strength, and identify the training factors that may be contributing to your pain.
Whether your symptoms started during a recent increase in training or have repeatedly interrupted your running or cycling, our physiotherapists can help you develop a clear pathway towards improved strength, load tolerance and confidence.

Understand your knee pain. Rebuild your capacity. Return to running and riding.
Understand Your ITB Pain. Build a Stronger Future.
Iliotibial band syndrome, also called ITB friction syndrome or iliotibial band pain, commonly causes pain around the outside of the knee during repetitive activities such as running and cycling.
The condition is thought to involve compression and irritation of sensitive tissues near the outer knee. Training demands, movement patterns and physical capacity may all contribute.

Understand What's Causing Your Pain
We assess your symptoms, training history, hip and lower-limb strength, and relevant movement patterns to identify likely contributing factors and guide rehabilitation.

Reduce Pain and Restore Movement
Treatment focuses on appropriate activity modification, targeted rehabilitation and practical strategies to help settle symptoms while maintaining suitable physical activity.

Build Strength for the Long Term
Progressive strengthening and carefully managed increases in training help improve your capacity to tolerate running, cycling and other activities.
Your Pathway From ITB Pain to Confident Movement
Successful ITB rehabilitation involves understanding your symptoms, identifying aggravating training demands and progressively rebuilding your capacity for activity.
We discuss your symptoms, running or cycling history, training loads and goals before assessing lower-limb strength, movement and relevant clinical signs.
We explain our findings and develop an individualised plan, including advice on modifying training and managing aggravating activities.
Your rehabilitation may include progressive hip and lower-limb strengthening, movement retraining where indicated and a gradual increase in physical loading.
We guide your return to running, cycling or sport through a structured progression based on symptoms, physical capacity and your individual goals.
ITB Pain Is About More Than a Tight Band.
Stretching or foam rolling alone may not address the factors contributing to ITB syndrome. Understanding training demands, improving physical capacity and progressively returning to activity are important parts of rehabilitation.

PERSONALISED ITB REHABILITATION
More Than Pain Relief. Understand Why Your Knee Hurts.
ITB syndrome can develop when repetitive loading exceeds the capacity of tissues around the outside of the knee.
At Up N Adam, we consider your running or cycling volume, training intensity, hills, recent changes in activity, lower-limb strength and individual movement characteristics.
Where appropriate, we use VALD strength testing to assess hip and lower-limb muscular capacity. Our running video analysis can help identify movement characteristics that may be relevant to your symptoms.
For cyclists, we can also assess riding position, training demands and bike setup, with professional bike fitting available where appropriate.
Our goal is to help you understand your symptoms, rebuild physical capacity and return to running or riding with greater confidence.
ITB Pain and Related Conditions We Assess
Pain on the outside of the knee isn't always ITB syndrome. A thorough assessment helps distinguish ITB-related pain from other conditions that may require different management.
The key to overcoming ITB pain isn't simply stretching more — it's understanding the demands on your knee and rebuilding the capacity to meet them.
ITB syndrome commonly causes pain on the outside of the knee during running, sometimes appearing after a predictable distance. We assess training loads, strength and running demands to guide rehabilitation.
Repetitive knee movement during cycling can contribute to lateral knee symptoms. We assess your physical capacity, riding demands and bike position to help identify relevant contributing factors.
ITB pain that repeatedly returns may reflect unresolved training-load or physical-capacity issues. We review your previous rehabilitation, strength and activity progression to develop a more sustainable plan.
Not all pain on the outside of the knee is caused by the ITB. Meniscus injuries, ligament conditions and other structures may produce similar symptoms. We assess your knee to help identify the likely cause and guide management.
ITB symptoms may develop after increases in running distance, downhill running, cycling volume or training intensity. We assess the relationship between symptoms and training demands to guide appropriate progression.
Returning to training after ITB pain requires more than waiting for symptoms to disappear. We help you rebuild strength, manage training loads and progressively restore your tolerance for running and riding.
Experienced Care. A Personal Approach.
Our physiotherapists combine clinical assessment, objective testing and progressive rehabilitation to help runners, cyclists and active people overcome knee pain and return to the activities they enjoy.
