Massage – More Than Muscles: The Nervous System Connection

ree

Massage has long been associated with muscle release and rehabilitation. But we now understand that the real story runs much deeper—into the nervous system itself.

Our bodies are integrated networks, not isolated parts. The Central Nervous System (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, governs everything from movement to mood. When the parasympathetic nervous system (your “rest and digest” mode) is activated, your body can access true recovery—physically and mentally.

Remedial massage can stimulate this calming state. Research shows it reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), while increasing serotonin and dopamine. That’s more than just feeling relaxed—it’s biochemistry working in your favour.

Think of it this way: the CNS is like the master switchboard. If you calm the wiring, the whole system—muscles, organs, emotions—can function better. Whether you’re training hard or just living a demanding life, tapping into your nervous system through massage can have far-reaching effects.
